Thomas Edward Mason Sr., 84, of Odon

Thomas Edward Mason Sr., 84, of Odon, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at The Timbers of Jasper Nursing Facility in Jasper, Indiana. 

He was born on April 30, 1942, in Corsicana, Texas to Thomas and Bess (Anderson) Mason. Thomas married Jan (Clinkenbeard) Mason on March 25, 1972, and she survives. 

Thomas was a hardworking and dedicated man whose life was defined by service, innovation, and a passion for racing and aviation. He worked as an EMT with SouthWest Medical for 22 years and proudly served 24 years as a volunteer with the Washington Township Fire Department. Thomas also worked for and retired as General Manager of Washington Fire and Hazard Control in Washington, Indiana, where his talent for machining led him to design and build fire nozzles that are now used throughout the industry around the world. 

Thomas had a lifelong passion for racing. At just 16 years old, he toured with a pit crew, sparking a love for drag racing, NASCAR, sprint car racing, and all things motorsports that stayed with him throughout his life. He especially enjoyed spending time at the track and helping in the pits and passed that love onto his grandchildren. He also had a deep love for aviation. Thomas was an aircraft mechanic and an avid private pilot who cherished flying his family on trips back home to Texas in their private plane. Thomas will be remembered for his determination, generosity, adventurous spirit, and unwavering work ethic, all of which made a lasting impact on his family, friends, and community. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Thomas Edward Jr., and his sister Frances Chatreau. 

Thomas is survived by his wife Jan, his daughter, Lynnette (Chris) Matteson, his siblings, Guy (Frani) Mason and Johnny Mason, his grandchildren, Preston Matteson and Heath (Haley) Matteson, great-grandchildren, Parker and Jackson Matteson, and several nieces and nephews. 

A funeral service will be held on Thursday May 28, 2026, at 10:00 A.M. at Blake and Wagler Funeral Home in Montgomery, Indiana with Don Smith to officiate. Burial will follow in Antioch Cemetery. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday May 27, 2026, from 3:00 P.M until 7:00 P.M at Blake and Wagler Funeral Home in Montgomery, Indiana and again from 9:00 A.M to 9:45 A.M on Thursday May 28, 2026 before the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Daviess County Humane Society.
