Stephen R. “Steve” Burger, age 79 of St. Anthony

Stephen R. “Steve” Burger, age 79 of St. Anthony, Indiana, passed away surrounded by family at 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Deaconess Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Indiana. 

Steve was born in Huntingburg, Indiana on August 19, 1946 to Sylvester and Viola (Schwenk) Burger.  He married Nancy Persohn on April 18, 1968 in St. Anthony Catholic Church. 

He was a veteran of the Indiana Army National Guard. Steve worked for Central Concrete for 33 years, and retired from Masterbrand Cabinets in Ferdinand. He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and attended St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony Indiana and was a member of the St. Anthony Conservation Club. Steve’s passion was cooking, often preparing requested meals for friends and family.  

He was in his element mowing the yard on his John Deere.  He was an avid lifelong I.U. and St. Louis Cardinals fan, and recently an Indiana Fever fan.  He also enjoyed camping, playing golf, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.   

Steve is survived by his wife, Nancy Burger of St. Anthony, two daughters, Stacey Hurst (Kurt), Jasper, and Jodi Ferrell (Kevin), Evansville, one son, Kyle Burger (Trish), Dubois, five grandchildren: Caleb and Dillon Hurst, Noah and Kainen Ferrell, and Brynlee Orndorff, two great grandchildren: Arya and Palmer Hurst, one brother, Kevin Burger (Connie), Jasper, two sister-in-laws: Marilyn Burger and Sharon Burger, both of Jasper,  brother-in-law, Denny Persohn (Irene), Bretzville, and nieces and nephews. 

Besides his parents, Steve is preceded in death by infant twin daughters, Sonya Grace and Tonya Marie Burger, and two brothers: Gerald Burger and Randall Burger. 

A Mass of Christian Burial for Stephen R. “Steve” Burger will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Indiana, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.   

The American Legion Post #493 will conduct military graveside rites. 

A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, and from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Mass time on Wednesday at the church.
