Ms. Joan Rohde
It is with heavy hearts and a deep sense of peace, we announce that our beloved Joan Rohde (69),
a beautiful mother, Nana, sister and friend, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, May 1, 2026 at
the Gateway Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, IN.
Joan was born in Bay City, Michigan, to Vern and Frances (Johnson) Walraven. She was one of
10 children, 8 of which lived on their family farm. She loved coming from a family farm and
often recalled those fond memories in daily conversations.
She was married to Kurt A. Rohde on September 21, 1979, in Bay City, MI. The couple later
moved to Sarasota, FL in February of 1985. Kurt gained his wings on November 3, 2008.
She was a devoted and loving mother to Chris (Connie) of Louisville, KY, and Megan (Jon) of
Loogootee, IN.
She is lovingly remembered by her stepmother, Donna Walraven of Bay City, MI. Her siblings:
Michael (Kathleen) Walraven of Horton, MI; Mary (Doug) Rousse of Bay City, MI; Sandy
Walraven of Ada, MI; Tom Walraven of Kawkawlin, MI; and Sue (Jim) Maus of West Bend, WI.
As well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Dave Walraven; her sister, Karen
Haberland and two infant siblings.
Her greatest joy in life was first being a mother and then later being “Nana” to her seven
wonderful grands, as she would call them and the many other children who referred to her as
“Nana Joan.” Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren whom she adored: Elliot Rohde
(15), Jack Richer (15), Patrick Rohde (14), Harrison Richer (13), Katelyn Rohde (11), Adeline
Richer (11), and Charlotte Richer (9). She was a deeply devoted grandmother who enjoyed many
moments of FaceTiming, crafting, traveling, birthdays, and holidays. Time spent with her
grandchildren brought her immense happiness and she had no greater title than that of “Nana.”
Their accomplishments were the highlight of most of her conversations with others and she was
beyond proud of the family legacy she had played a part in shaping. They will forever carry her
love and inspiration in their hearts.
She will be remembered for her quiet and far-reaching kindnesses, her steadfast faith, her
devotion to her family and friends, and her determination to always go the extra mile. Her legacy
of faith, joy, love, and devotion to family and friends will continue to live on in all who knew her
and loved her.
Services will be held at Faith Baptist Church, Loogootee, IN on May 29th, 2026. Family will
receive loved ones beginning at 5:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life service at 6:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kids Hope Project where Joan served and
loved.
The Queen-Lee Chapel of George Funeral Care has been entrusted with the arrangements.
