Michael D. Stenftenagel, age 71, of Jasper

Michael D. Stenftenagel, age 71, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 8:33 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Deaconess Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Indiana.

Mike was born in Jasper, Indiana, on November 4, 1954, to Wilfred and Natascha “Blackie” (Olinik) Stenftenagel.  He married Karen Jahn on April 11, 1981.

He was a 1972 graduate of Jasper High School.  He then earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Indiana State University.

He taught history for Washington Catholic High School and then retired from Cannelton High School, where he taught history as well. He coached basketball for Washington Catholic High School and baseball for Cannelton High School.  In addition, he helped coach girls’ basketball and boys' baseball for Jasper High School.  After retirement he worked at CVS and Holiday Liquors.

He attended St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland.  He was a member of the Indiana Teachers Association and the Ireland K of C.Mike was an avid sports fan, and especially loved the St. Louis Cardinals and I.U. Basketball.  He also loved history, reading, traveling with his wife to the beach, and spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen Stenftenagel, Jasper, IN, one son, Craig (Suzanne) Sermersheim, Ireland, IN, two grandchildren, Aidan and Anna Sermersheim, two bonus grandchildren, Erika and Kaleb Turpin, sisters-in-law, Valeda Moeller, Jasper, IN, and Gay Stenftenagel, Flagstaff, AZ, brothers-in-law, Sylvan (Mary) Jahn, Jasper, IN, James (Marilyn) Jahn, Jasper, IN, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death is one brother, C. John Stenftenagel and a brother-in-law, Barney Moeller.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Michael D. Stenftenagel will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Ireland, Indiana, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Mass time at the church on Tuesday.Memorial contributions may be made to the Dubois County Humane Society.
