Melissa “Missy” Anne (Guthrie) Wagler, age 39

Melissa “Missy” Anne (Guthrie) Wagler, age 39, of Clifton, Virginia passed away in the early morning hours of August 3, 2021. 

She was born on July 21, 1982, in Dallas, Texas to Steven M. Guthrie and Susan M. (Volkmann) Guthrie. The most important thing in life to Missy was her family. She leaves behind her loving husband of 12 years, Derrick M. Wagler, and sons Grayson (7), Pierson (5), and Lawson (3). She is also survived by her father Steven Guthrie (Cedar Hill, Texas); mother Susan (Volkmann) Guthrie and step-father John Vagasky (Carrollton, Texas); sister Sabrina (Guthrie) and Drake Holbrook and nephews Hayden and Hunter (Frisco, Texas); in-laws Fred and Rita (Smith) Wagler (Loogootee, Indiana); brother-in-law Mitchell and Trisha (Lannan) Wagler and nephews Kash and Gunnar (Loogootee, Indiana); brother-in-law Tyler and Devon (Lantz) Wagler and nephews Griffin and Quintin (Loogootee, Indiana); aunt Carolyn (Volkmann) Huggins and John (Dallas, Texas); aunt Margaret (Volkmann) Winkle and Greg (Carrollton, Texas); uncle Craig “Bo” Guthrie (Cedar Hill, Texas); cousin Aaron Winkle and family Rachelle, Paxton, and Everett (Crossroads, Texas); cousin Andrew Winkle and Ashlee (Fort Worth, Texas); cousin Jessica (Dulworth) Warick and family Jerad, Emma, and Cillian (Montrose, Colorado); step-grandfather Edwin Roberts (Cedar Hill, Texas); family nanny Laura Avila (Clifton, Virginia); dozens of Wagler, Smith, and Leach family members throughout the Midwest, and Volkmann family members in Germany. 

Missy is preceded in death by grandparents Henry and Janet (Leach) Volkmann (Dallas, Texas); Ralph Guthrie and Carol Guthrie Roberts (Dallas, Texas); and aunt Ravis Guthrie (Dallas, Texas). 

Missy was honored to be a Unit Chief with the FBI Cyber Division where she spent 14 years serving our country and receiving prestigious awards throughout her career in the National Intelligence Community. She received dual bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Marketing from the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana in 2004 and dual master’s degrees in Forensic Psychology and Community Counseling at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia in 2007. She was a 2000 graduate of The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas. Missy was an active community volunteer and leader, serving on boards and volunteering even with a distinguished and demanding job, a wonderful husband, and three fabulous little boys. She was an extremely proud member of the Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) sorority and continued to be very involved in local alumni chapters (NOVA & Loudoun County). She was also a faithful member of Junior League of Northern Virginia and was an active member of the Union Mill Elementary PTA. 

Missy was an exceptional mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and colleague. From an early age, she dedicated her time to volunteering and helping others. She made everyone feel deeply welcome, valued, and loved, and her sense of humor brightened the lives of many. She was devoted to her husband and three boys and loved them more than anything in the world. Missy was an incredible person who will be missed dearly by all who had the opportunity and privilege to have known her. 

A visitation will be held on Monday, August 9, 2021, at 2pm followed by a service at 3:30pm at Centreville United Methodist Church (6400 Old Centreville Rd, Centreville, VA 20121), where Missy and family were members. All friends, family, and loved ones are welcome to attend in-person or virtually ( A second visitation will be held in Loogootee, Indiana on August 12, 2021, from 10am to 2pm followed by a service at 2pm at the Loogootee United Methodist Church (208 Main Street, Loogootee, IN 47553) with burial following at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Loogootee where all friends, family, and loved ones are welcome. A final memorial service will be held in Dallas, Texas at a later time.

 In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Melissa “Missy” Guthrie Wagler Endowment Scholarship Fund through the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation( Missy was committed to service and scholarship and received multiple ZTA scholarships throughout her collegiate years.
