Mary Esther Snelling, age 96, of Birdseye

Mary Esther Snelling, age 96, of Birdseye, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022, at her residence.

On May 25, 1926, the last child of John and Irene (Dillard) Dell was born at Wickliffe.  Mary Esther Snelling has lived her life in Crawford County and was the last member of seven children.  She married Ira Vincent Snelling on July 1, 1950.  

Mary was employed at Patoka Elementary School in Taswell as a cook for over 20 years and also handstitched quilts.  She was a member of the Birdseye Eastern Star and Wickliffe United Methodist Church.  Her favorite thing to do was babysit for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ira Vincent Snelling, who passed away on March 15, 1990; three brothers, Ernest, Ottis and Howard Deel; and three sisters, Nellie Williams, Nova Verpleaste and Amanda Atkins.

She is survived by two children, Eli (Mary D.) Snelling of Wickliffe, IN and Dorothy (Richard) Danner of Sellersburg, IN; two grandchildren, Erica (Ryan) Scherzinger of Evansville, IN and Andy (Dana McBride) Snelling of Wickliffe, IN; two step-grandchildren, Richard Danner of Evansville, IN and Troy (Jane) Danner of Borden, IN; five great-grandchildren, Levi Allinger of Jasper, IN, Wyatt Allinger of Evansville, IN, Grace Allinger of Leavenworth, IN, and Hunter and Evan Snelling of St. Anthony, IN; six step-great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joseph and John Danner of Champlin, MN, Dawson McBride of Evansville, IN and Marshal Scherzinger of Jasper, IN; and by two great-great-grandchildren, Axton Deanne and Savanna Danner of Champlin, MN.

Funeral services for Mary Esther Snelling will be held at 10:00 a.m., E.D.T., Friday, June 10, 2022, at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg.  Burial will follow at Patoka Memorial Cemetery.  Pastor Albert Madden will officiate the service.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home from 2:00-8:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 9th, and also one hour prior to the service on Friday.  The Birdseye Eastern Star will hold a service at 5:00 p.m.
