Lawrence E. “Larry” Thewes, age 81, of Celestine

Lawrence E. “Larry” Thewes, age 81, of Celestine, Indiana, passed away at 4:32 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at home surrounded by family.

Larry was born in Huntingburg, Indiana, on January 20, 1945, to Alois and Martina (Werner) Thewes.  He married Marilyn Persohn on July 11, 1964, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Schnellville, Indiana.

He was a farmer, and also worked as a Union Carpenter, where he retired after over 50 years.  In addition, he was the President and an appraiser for Celestine Mutual Fire Insurance.He was a member of St. Celestine Catholic Church – St Isidore Parish, Celestine Community Club, the Celestine Park, and the Carpenter’s Union 224.

Larry enjoyed mushroom hunting, playing cards and horseshoes, watching his favorite T.V. shows, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Marilyn Thewes, Celestine, IN,  three children, Michelle (Dean) Keller, Dubois, IN, Paul (Susie) Thewes, Celestine, IN, and Duane (Courtney) Thewes, Celestine, IN, one daughter-in-law, Gail Thewes, Celestine, IN, 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, five sisters, Janice (Dave) Knies, Jasper, IN, Mary (Steve) Rohleder, Bretzville, IN, Karen (Tony) Mehringer, Schnellville, IN, Kathy (Tony) Vogler, Jasper, IN, and Cheryl (Kevin) Haas, Jasper, IN, five brothers, Jim (Connie) Thewes, Ireland, IN, Leon (Donna) Thewes, St. Anthony, IN, Allen Thewes, Celestine, IN, Randy (Connie) Thewes, Celestine, IN, and Kevin Thewes, Celestine, one brother-in-law, Tom Fickas Sr., Colorado Springs, CO, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are one son, Keith Thewes, one daughter, Beverly Harris, one grandson, Austin Seng, one great grandson, Kamdyn Seng, one sister, Doris Fickas, and one brother, Jerry Thewes.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence E. “Larry” Thewes will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at St. Celestine Catholic Church in Celestine, Indiana, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the church.Memorial contributions may be made to the Celestine Fire Department, the Celestine Park, the Celestine Community Club or to a favorite charity.
