Karen L. Wallem, age 80, of Huntingburg
Karen L. Wallem, age 80, of Huntingburg, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, honesty and love. Karen was the beloved eldest daughter of Arnold and Mary Engle. She was born on September 4, 1944, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Karen’s journey through life was one filled with love, family and a deep commitment to her faith.
She met her soulmate, Ralph Wallem, while they were both in high school in Linton. Their love story began at that time, and they were married on January 23, 1966, in Linton, spending 59 beautiful years together. Karen is survived by her devoted husband, Ralph Wallem of Huntingburg, Ind.; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jennifer Wallem of Greenwood, Ind.; her cherished grandchildren, Alexandra, Zachariah, and Samuel Wallem; two sisters, Debra Poole and Janice Engle both of Linton, Ind.; and by nieces and nephews.
Karen was a proud graduate of Ball State University’s nursing program and dedicated her career caring for others as a registered nurse. Additionally, Karen and Ralph moved to Huntingburg, Indiana, in 1971, where they enjoyed raising their children in a supportive, small community. She was also a devout Christian and a proud member of Salem United Church of Christ in Huntingburg, where her faith was an important cornerstone of her life.
Karen had many passions that put a smile on her face. She loved dogs, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, and of course anything chocolate - her sweet indulgence. She enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family, whether it was playing cards or board games with her grandchildren or simply enjoying a summer day by a lake in Angola, Indiana, with a chocolate treat in hand. She was also known for her love of shopping - especially for shoes, and her keen interest in politics.
Karen had a bold, charismatic personality. She was a natural leader who took pride in her family, especially her son and his family. Her love for them was immeasurable, and she always spoke with pride about their achievements and joys.
While we will miss Karen deeply, her family takes comfort in knowing she is now reunited with God and those she loved and lost along the way - her daughter, Katherine L. Wallem, whom she has dearly missed for the past two decades; two sisters, Pam Guyton and infant Catherine Engle; and her parents.
