John J. Hopf, age 86, of Jasper

John J. Hopf, age 86, of Jasper, Indiana, passed away at 4:11 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at home.

John was born in Jasper, Indiana, on November 8, 1939, to Louis and Loretta (Bachman) Hopf.  He married Mary Carolyn Kiefer on July 2, 1960, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana.

He was a 1957 graduate of Jasper High School.He was a United States Army Veteran, serving in the reserves from 1959-1965.

He started his career with Herald Printing as a paper boy at age 10 delivering newspapers and worked his way up to being a commercial printer until his retirement after 51 years of service.

John was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society and was on the bereavement committee and volunteered for the church picnic with his wife.  

In addition, he was a member of ROJAC, lifetime member of the Jasper K of C, and a charter member of Marian Hallmark Collector’s Club.  He volunteered putting the flags out in the community with the Jasper Optimist Flag Committee.

He was an avid Rum player and enjoyed playing with his Monday Rum group.  He loved attending his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events, and was an avid IU fan.  He and his wife enjoyed traveling and going to the casino.  He was most proud that he had been on the Price is Right Show.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Carolyn Hopf, Jasper, IN, four children, Phil (Ruth) Hopf, Jasper, IN, Susan (Phil) Stetter, Jasper, IN, Scott (Chris) Hopf, Jasper, IN, and Luke (April) Hopf, Jasper, IN, one son-in-law, Keith (Sheila) Eckert, Ireland, IN, 10 grandchildren, Tara (Jeff) Albrecht, Kurt (Kelsey) Eckert, Brittney (Alex) Krempp, Reed Stetter, Kyle (Amber) Eckert, Austin Hopf, Eric (Haley) Hopf, Dawson (Sarah) Hopf, Dylan Hopf, and Eli Hopf, 10 great grandchildren, Wade and Jovi Albrecht, Jaelynn and Baylor Eckert, Kelli and Sophie Eckert, Amelia, Noah, and Hallie Krempp, and Brooks Hopf, one brother, Jerry L. Hopf, and nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

Preceding him in death is one daughter, Kelli Eckert, a sister-in-law, Charlotte Hopf, and a great niece, Ashley Doolittle.

A Mass of Christian Burial for John J. Hopf will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper.  The American Legion Post #147 will conduct military graveside rites.

A visitation will be from 2:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Becher-Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper, Indiana.  St. Joseph’s Parish will pray a rosary at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
