Gerhard “Jr.” E. Hackman, age 86, of Huntingburg

Gerhard “Jr.” E. Hackman, age 86, of Huntingburg, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2023, at his residence.

He was born August 21, 1937, in Huntingburg, Indiana, to Gerhard B. and Helen (Haas) Hackman; and married Shirley A. Fischer on October 10, 1959, at the Abbey Church in St. Meinrad.  Gerhard served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957 having spent time in Bamberg, Germany with the 15th Truck Company where he won many truck rodeos.  After having served in the U.S. Army, he farmed with his dad until 1967.  At this time, he began working for United Parcel Service until his retirement in 1992.  Gerhard drove 26 years accident free.  After his retirement, he worked for the National Park Service in the Department of Interior where he was awarded the National Safety Award in 1994.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Y.M.I. Club.  Gerhard had many interests which included Model A Fords, collecting antiques, playing cards (especially Sheepshead), and driving on backroads enjoying the countryside.  Gerhard was a loving husband, devoted father and father-in-law, and caring grandpa to his two granddaughters.  He will be greatly missed by those who were blessed to have known him.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Hackman of Huntingburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Matthew (Mary Beth) Hackman of Floyds Knobs; one sister, Clara Skaggs of Huntingburg; and two granddaughters, Lauren and Claire Hackman.

Gerhard was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings, Doreatha Grant, Cletus Hackman, Cordella Klem and Leona Hackman who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Gerhard “Jr.” Hackman will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 26, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  The funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Biju Thomas.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post #2366 Memorial Detail.

Friends may call for visitation at the Nass & Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 4:00-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday.  Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
