George E. Himsel, age 75, of Huntingburg

George E. Himsel, age 75, of Huntingburg, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 9, 2018, at home.

He was born November 19, 1943, in Huntingburg, to Elmer and Evelyn (Mann) Himsel; and married Mary Lou Welp on November 22, 1970, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntingburg.  George received a Bachelor’s Degree from Oakland City College and a Master’s of Education from Indiana State University.  He was a 5th grade teacher in the Southwest Dubois School Corporation for 36 years before retiring to enjoy his family.  George coached basketball for many years.  He was a passionate I.U. basketball fan.  He loved watching every game on his TV and talking basketball with his grandsons and friends.  He loved spending time at the Smoky Mountains, hiking trails with his beloved wife Mary Lou.  Anyone who knew him also knew of his love for racing.  He would walk the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for hours at a time to get a view of the cars from all angles.

George was an active member and volunteer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  He was also a former Church Board member.  In recent years, he enjoyed time volunteering at Shared Abundance in Huntingburg.  George loved his family more than anything in the world.  His seven grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he took great pride in sharing all of their accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four siblings, Eddie Himsel, Charles Himsel, Fred Himsel and Margaret Langley.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Lou Himsel of Huntingburg; two daughters, Stacey (Stephen) Matelic and Jennifer (Brian) Grcevich both of Indianapolis; one sister, Marlene Huls of Jasper; and seven grandchildren, Nate, Lyla, Eden, Drew, Chloe, Madelynn and Lucas.

Funeral services for George Himsel will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 14, 2018, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 556 W. Haysville Road, in Haysville with burial to follow at the church cemetery.  Reverend Timothy Holt will officiate at the service.

Visitation will be held at the Nass & Son Funeral Home, 208 N. Main Street, in Huntingburg from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 13th; and also at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m., on Friday.  Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
