Donald “Don” Eugene Wertman, age 75, of Dale

Donald “Don” Eugene Wertman, age 75, of Dale, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, surrounded by his family.

He was born on November 11, 1950, in Huntingburg, Indiana, to Victor Vernon Wertman and Virginia Lee (Evans) Wertman. On June 24, 1972, he married the love of his life, Donna Rae Hoofer, in Midway, Indiana.

He is survived by his two sons, Nathan (Kathy) Wertman of Evansville and Simon (Amanda) Wertman of Winslow; four beloved grandchildren, Chloe, Lincoln, Michaela, and Theodore Wertman; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Wertman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Donna Rae Wertman; daughter, Starr Michelle Wertman; stepmother, Cara Ella Wertman; brother, Walter Wertman; and stepbrother, James Hayden.

Don dedicated 38 years of his career to the railroad, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dependability. He proudly graduated from Dale High School with the Class of 1970 before honorably serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971. He was a proud member of the Abe Lincoln American Legion Post #444 in Dale and was deeply appreciative of his fellow veterans. Don also devoted many years to serving as a Boy Scout leader, taking great pride in mentoring young men and helping instill the values of leadership, service, and integrity.

Outside of work, Don found joy in tending his garden and collecting clocks, wrist watches, pocket watches, and pocket knives. Whether tending to his garden, adding to one of his collections, or sharing stories from years gone by, he appreciated life's simple pleasures. Above all else, Don treasured his family. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, creating memories they will forever cherish.

A funeral service for Don Wertman will be held at 10:00 a.m., C.D.T., on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Rainey Funeral Home in Dale, with Pastor Joel Grisby officiating. Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Abe Lincoln Post #444 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-8:00 p.m., C.D.T., on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Rainey Funeral Home in Dale, and again from 9:00-10:00 a.m., C.D.T., on Saturday, at the funeral home prior to the service.
