Dale Austin Smith, 81

Dale Austin Smith, 81, passed away on Thursday February 2, 2023 at HHC Kingwood Hospital with his family by his side. 

He was born April 14, 1941, in Loogootee, Indiana to Vincent and Lilly Parsons Smith.

Dale is survived by his loving family: wife of 59 years, Vicki Jeffers Smith: son, Jeffrey Smith (Mona) and daughters April Smith and Allison Smith Coda (Vanta II); grandchildren Sumner Smith (Cortlyn), Sloane Smith, Vanta Coda III, Zane Coda and Beau Coda. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Lilly Smith, brother James Smith and sister Lynda Smith Stoll.

Dale graduated from Loogootee High School in 1959 and began working for the State of Indiana as a land surveyor. He loved working and being outdoors, so land surveying became a natural choice for a career. He was a registered professional land surveyor in Indiana, Ohio, Texas, and Arizona. He worked with Midstates Engineering in Indianapolis, Indiana until he founded Site Line Land Surveying & Civil Engineering in Greenwood, Indiana. In 1982 the family moved to Waxahachie, Texas and he became Vice-President at Hewitt - Zollars Engineering and Land Surveying in Dallas, Texas. He retired in 2005 to Kingwood, Texas to be close to his family. Never one to sit around, he took a part-time job with the City of Humble, Senior Transportation from 2012-2022. He loved fishing. He was an avid college sports fan and loved March Madness. He learned everything about lacrosse and followed his grandsons in the sport. He had a deep appreciation and pride in his family and he lived through his grandchildren, celebrating their accomplishments and dreams. His loyal companion, Crockett the basset hound, was always by his side.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee, Indiana.

Visitation will be held Saturday, April 1, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
