Barbra R. Nelson, age 92, of Huntingburg

Barbra R. Nelson, age 92, of Huntingburg, Indiana, passed away on September 5, 2026 at Huntingburg Beehive Assisted Living.


She was born on July 27, 1934, to Victor and Ruth (Heitman) Elliott.  Barbra graduated from Huntingburg High School; received a registered nursing degree from Protestant Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Evansville and began her career at Stork Memorial Hospital. She dedicated 52 years of exceptional service to patients until her retirement at St. Joseph's Hospital in Huntingburg. Barb would have loved to continue working, but she was unable to since the hospital closed down. Barb "never worked a day in her life," she always chose to work the third shift on the medical surgical unit. She loved working nights which allowed her to have more time with her family.  Outside of her profession, Barbra was an extraordinary athlete.  She loved playing volleyball and slow-pitch softball as pitcher playing for three local leagues - Holland, Huntingburg and Jasper - along with travel teams and winning several state titles.  As athletic as she was, Barbra was also gifted with writing eloquent letters, sending out numerous personal messages weekly.  She was a member of Salem Church, YMI Club and Huntingburg Conservation Club.  Barbra married Don Nelson on July 24, 1955, at Lincoln City Chapel.  He preceded her in death on February 13, 1992.   Also preceding her in death are, her daughter, Robin Wertman; brothers, Gene and Don Elliott; and a grandson, Kurt Keyes.


Barbra is survived by her son, Jay (Belinda) Nelson of Jasper; a daughter, Kimberly Keyes of Terre Haute; her sister, Bonnie (Bill) Faupel of Naples, Florida; son-in-law, Keith Wertman of Holland; grandchildren, Ashely (Jake) Allshouse, Paige Wertman, Cameron (Alyssa) Wertman, Jase Keyes, Jayme Scott, Kalen Keyes, Natasha (Andrew) Fresenburg, Casey (Taylor) Nelson; great-grandchildren, Elliot, Ruger, Lillian, Axel, Caroline, Clara, Lu, Everett, Emmitt, Elliott, Cooper, and Quinn. 


Visitation and funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Nass and Son Funeral Home in Huntingburg from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service beginning at 1:00 p.m., EDT. with burial to follow in Fairmount Cemetery.  The Nursing Honor Guard of Southern Indiana and Pastor Jeff Donihue will officiate the services.   Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Church.  Condolences may be shared at:  www.nassandson.com
