Warm Weather Brings Huntingburg Park Improvements Front and Center

A preview of summer weather arrived in full force in Huntingburg on Monday, just in time for the Park and Rec department’s April board meeting in the Old Town Hall. Preparations for the coming season were heating up as well, as the board addressed some issues facing Huntingburg public spaces. Special attention was given to unauthorized use of community grounds and the necessity for public safety protocols. Possible solutions included utilizing the Adopt a Park program. This would provide a framework for local Scout troops who are already involved in beautification efforts, and any others who want to be involved, to stay active in safeguarding their local parks.

The board further discussed golf cart usage, pending fees, and fee collections, as well as more effective procedures for facility rentals. Updates were also given on upcoming and in progress projects, including one playground near a southwest shelter that needs repair. The board expressed their desire to significantly upgrade the facility and provide for improved sightlines where parents can watch their children at the playground from the ballfield. Discussions were held about expanding current Parks and Rec offerings with the installation of permanent activity stations. These could include cornhole, pickleball, Ping-Pong, volleyball, and expanded walking trails. A brief discussion was held on a possible celebratory gathering or grand opening for the recently unveiled Northside Park, located in the Hunter’s Crossing subdivision.

Good weather allowed for an early opening for the driving range, which yielded encouraging numbers from fees brought in during this time. General maintenance items were noted, including the filling of a pothole at the Cherry Street driveway. With summer fast approaching, some tennis courts will need repair over the next year to keep them playable, and a number of annually scheduled items related to pool preparation were mentioned, including the hiring of lifeguards.
