Vincennes University’s Generations Awarded AmeriCorps Grant to Support New Volunteer Program

Generations, a division of Workforce Development and Community Services of Vincennes University, has been awarded $89,550 to support older adult volunteer service in Dubois and Pike counties from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. This grant will expand the agency’s volunteer services for those 55 and older in Dubois and Pike counties where it has operated since 1975. AmeriCorps Senior Volunteers will engage individuals and caregivers through support groups, socialization events and memory cafes, help older adults identify fraud and scams, support food pantries and nutrition distribution, complete tax returns, facilitate health education classes and distribute health information, as well as meet other community needs.

“We are thrilled to have received this award,” said Laura Holscher, Assistant Vice-President, Vincennes University. “This new funding will leverage the skills and experience of older adults to develop a strong volunteer program in Dubois and Pike counties. The project also enables adults over the age of 55 to learn new skills and connect with their community.”

You can learn more about AmeriCorps Seniors at AmeriCorps.gov/Serve or about Generations at Generationsnetwork.org. To volunteer, if you are an organization needing volunteers, or if you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact Cathy Jones at 812-888-5159.

As part of this grant, Generations is looking for a full-time Volunteer Director who has a passion for working with volunteers to address community needs in Dubois and Pike counties.
