Vincennes University rides wave of strong momentum with campus upgrades and fiscal success
Driven by strategic vision and fiscal responsibility, Vincennes University is moving forward with momentum. At the June 10 Board of Trustees meeting, university leaders highlighted major milestones that point to a vibrant and prosperous future for VU, its students, and the communities the University serves across Indiana.
Major Upgrade Coming to Vincennes Campus
Vincennes Campus life is getting a magnificent upgrade. The centerpiece of this revitalization will be a soaring sculpture of VU’s logo, a letter ‘V’ with a flame in the center, that will stand 20 feet high.
Director of Architectural Services and Facilities Andrew Young announced an impressive transformation of Beckes Park, a central pathway near the Welsh Administration Building and Governor’s Hall, and across from the newly opened $33.9 million Center for Health Sciences and Learning Innovation.
VU President Dr. Chuck Johnson noted that the new design will beautifully the campus environment in a prominent location and stand as a source of university pride.
The park will feature brick and concrete pavers as well as planters to maintain its natural elements. The project will also include improvements to pedestrian crosswalks and the addition of walkways to improve parking access.
Construction is expected to be completed in September 2026.
VU Successfully Navigates Fiscal Year
Vice President for Financial Services Conya Wampler and Associate Vice President of Budget and Finance Travis Linneweber provided Trustees with a mid-cycle budget update as VU approaches the midpoint of the biennium.
Through careful planning, strategic decision-making, and a shared commitment to fiscal stewardship across the University, VU has remained financially sound while continuing to support its mission. Efforts have included thoughtful management of hiring, ongoing evaluation of processes and expenses, and pursuit of external funding opportunities to maximize resources and support student success.
VU Impact on Jackson County Workforce
VU’s success extends across Indiana through its powerful workforce development initiatives.
Vice President of Workforce Development and Community Services David Tucker and Director of Industrial Maintenance Training Jerry Ruble updated the Trustees on the University’s outstanding partnership with the Jackson County Learning Center. They were joined by Jackson County Industrial Development Corporation Executive Director Jim Plump, Community Foundation of Jackson County President and CEO Dan Davis, and VU Site Director/Instructor of the Jackson County Learning Center Brian Sawyers.
VU has provided training at the center for 14 Jackson County employer partners. The training focuses on Basic Mechanical, Basic Electrical, Intermediate Mechanical, and Intermediate Electrical, and it is making a significant impact.
Since November 2023, 100 individuals have participated in training, 199 total certificates have been awarded, and 20 individuals have completed all four classes currently offered.
“We’re very, very pleased with the relationship that we have been able to establish with Vincennes,” Plump said.
Other Board business:
- To ensure academic programs remain aligned with workforce demand and student interest, the Trustees approved suspending 12 degrees or certificates and deleting four degrees that are no longer active or relevant.
- On behalf of the Board, Chairman Mike Sievers congratulated Jaci Lederman on her recent appointment as Provost, Vice President of Instructional Services, and Dean of Faculty. He thanked Adam Watkins, who is stepping down from his role as Assistant Vice President and Dean, for his service and his impact on the campus. Sievers also praised Assistant Dean of Academic and Student Services Alli Tempel for her willingness to serve as interim dean, beginning June 26.
