From Local Sources

JASPER -- Two people are lucky to be alive today after their car struck a tree and caught fire over the weekend.

Police say 28-year-old Milagro Cortez Funes went off of the south side of 15th Street near Meridian Road around 2:50 Sunday morning.

The car hit a tree and continued, landing on its side and catching fire.  Funes was able to crawl to safety.

Her passenger, Rene Antonia Vanegas, had to be pulled from the burning vehicle by Jasper Police officers before it became completely engulfed.

Both the driver and her passenger suffered multiple injuries and were transported to Memorial Hospital.
