Trooper Jacob Lauer Receives Life Saving Award
On March 22, 2024, Trooper Jacob Lauer responded to assist and ultimately saved the life of a fellow Hoosier who hac become entangled from the waist down in a floor sweep auger inside a grain bin. Trooper Lauer quickly realized the gravity of the situation and immediately acted. Trooper Lauer's 15 years of service as a volunteer firefighter made him very familiar with the fire equipment and personnel on the scene.
When Trooper Lauer arrived, he initially provided a tourniquet to EMS personnel who were already inside the grain bin providing first aid. The victim had suffered an amputation of his foot. Additional tourniquets were applied to the victim's right arm and both legs. Trooper Lauer made numerous trips, running back and forth between the victim and a nearby firetruck, where he gathered lifesaving tools and equipment. In total, Trooper Lauer carried lights, an EMS monitor, a grinder, and an AED.
Trooper Lauer then began to assist with the exhaustive extrication of the victim, which took approximately 45 minutes. The victim's legs were so tightly wrapped around the auger that a four-foot section of the auger was initially cut to prepare the victim for medical transport. Trooper Lauer and other first responders quickly realized they had to reduce the auger length to a two-foot section to allow the victim to fit into the helicopter. The victim was then flown to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville. The victim suffered amputation to both legs below the knee.
Miraculously, the victim's arm was saved.
On this day, without question, Trooper Lauer's actions played an integral part in the preservation of life. His years of experience as a firefighter, calmness under pressure, and quick thinking are a testament to his true character and in keeping with the finest traditions of the Indiana State Police.
Trooper Lauer is to be commended for his extraordinary conduct in saving the life of a fellow human being.
For exceptional meritorious service, this certificate is awarded this twenty-first day of April 2026.
