Special Olympics Indiana to Host Dubois County Fun Run

Dubois County residents will soon have the opportunity to participate in a fun event to benefit Special Olympics Indiana.

SOIN-Dubois County athlete Michael Drabik announced that Special Olympics Indiana will hold a Fun Run on October 3, 2026, from 8-11 am. The course will use West, South, and Old Huntingburg Roads, and the Youth Sports Complex will be used as a staging area. The route will not close roads to traffic.

Special Olympics is an international organization that began in 1968. Created by Eunice Kennedy Shriver for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, the group now supports over five million athletes with developmental challenges. Adam Schwartz, a member of the Athlete Leader Council, said of the organization, “It provides healthy exercise, opportunities to learn new skills, a sense of belonging, and opportunities for friendships.”

This year’s run will be one of two fundraising events held annually to benefit the group in Dubois County. The first event, the Polar Plunge, was held earlier in the year. Fundraising and Public Relations Coordinator Rose Terwiske said that these events “are what keeps us going.” For the Dubois County Fun Run, Terwiske explained, “We try to find an organization to come out and be the buddies for our athletes.” This year, the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) will be serving as its partner and has volunteered to provide running buddies for all participating athletes. Everyone is invited to join in the fun and run or walk in support of Special Olympics Indiana.
