Southridge Middle School Takes First Place in ILEARN Math Scores for State of Indiana

This year’s freshman class at Southridge High School got some exciting news at a surprise assembly, as they learned about a major accomplishment.

During the 2025-26 school year, while still at Southridge Middle School, the students turned in the highest passing rate statewide for the ILEARN Math assessment. Eighth-grade math teacher Myra Schnuck credited the students’ commitment and persistence for the strong results. She applauded their success, saying, “I’m so proud of the students for their hard work during class, completion of homework, and perseverance on the test. My hope is that they continue to believe in themselves and do well in their future math classes.”

School officials said the results are also the product of ongoing efforts by educators and administrators across Southwest Dubois County School Corporation. The district has worked to ensure curriculum aligns with state standards while using assessment data to identify student needs and shape instruction. That extra effort contributes to continued academic achievement by providing students with the tools they need to succeed.

Superintendent Chip Mehaffey gave credit to Ms. Schnuck, SMS Principal Betsy Lange, Director of Curriculum Melissa Boeglin, and the may other teachers who have supported them in their scholastic journey. He noted, “Having the highest 8th grade math pass rate in Indiana is an incredible accomplishment by our students and a tremendous reflection of the work happening throughout the SW Dubois School District.”

While their math scores were especially impressive, so were their overall scores. The class came in at fifth overall in the state when their math and English/Language Arts ILEARN scores were combined. Southwest Dubois officials attributed that achievement to the combined efforts of the entire eighth-grade teaching team, including English teacher Lori Smith, Brad Ohanian, Jeff Tempel, Diana Rico Sandoval, Shaylon Pierce, and Erin Marshall.

The results highlight the district’s continued emphasis on curriculum alignment, teaching methodologies, intervention and the use of student data to guide educational decisions. At the center of the achievement, however, are the students whose effort and determination produced the extraordinary results.
