Some Dubois County Bridges to Receive Major Overhaul
Dubois County is wrapping up this year’s road repairs as it prepares for the coming year.
In his public comments, County Highway Engineer Levi Leffert gave an update on the current
and upcoming work on local roads and bridges. Calcar plans to complete their 2025 paving
projects by next week. Paving is finished on 580 North and work on Dubois Cuzco Road should
be done by the end of the week. Paving on Old Petersburg Road and 490 West will be finished
next week.
The speed limit signs on 490 West have been changed from 45 mph to 35 mph, following an
ordinance approval to modify the speed limit. The Council signed a letter of financial
commitment for work on county bridges through the Bridge Safety Improvement federal call
for projects. This has a 90/10 match and would fund work on 50 to 60 of the county’s bridges.
INDOT confirmed that the work would be eligible for consideration of funds, so a grant
application will be submitted this month.
Repairs have begun on Bridge 21 on 200 West over Little Creek, approximately a half mile north
of County Road 600 North. The road closure is expected to last approximately 6 weeks. The
existing superstructure will be removed and replaced with new steel beams and a concrete
deck. Due to the nature of the repairs, there will be no through traffic at all, including for
emergency vehicles.
On Portersville West, a small structure inspection concluded that the structure met the
definition of a bridge. It will be transferred to the National Bridge Inventory and then an
inspection will be completed under the county’s current contract with American Structurepoint.
This will place the structure’s maintenance under more favorable budgeting terms, with 80%
covered by federal funds and the remaining 20% covered by the county.
In upcoming projects, there will be a superstructure replacement for the steel beams and
concrete deck on Bridge 116 on County Road 820 East, 0.8 miles north of Schnellville Road. The
work is planned for mid-December and will close all through traffic. Weather will be evaluated
before work begins.
Bridge 78 is located over Patoka River on County Road 600 West. Built in 1969, the bridge is one
of the county’s largest at 222 feet long and 3 spans. In January of 2025, an agreement was
approved with American Structurepoint to provide design services for rehabilitation work. The
plans are expected to be available by the end of November, with contract awarding by
February. Construction should begin in the spring and extend through the summer. The
estimated cost is $650,000. Additional appropriations will be requested from the County
Council.
