Sen. Spencer’s SB 164 Passes Out of the Senate

Senate Bill (SB) 164, authored by State Senator Mark Spencer (D-Gary), would require our Department of Agriculture to conduct a study and report regarding the feasibility of establishing community or urban microfarm zones statewide.

“Indiana is an agricultural state through and through,” said Spencer. “This bill lets us take a closer look at a way even more communities in Indiana can engage with that identity.”

Spencer expressed gratitude to both Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) for hearing the legislation in committee and Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville) for being the second author on the legislation.

“This legislation is another tool at our disposal to address food insecurity and access to nutritious, Indiana-grown produce, statewide,” said Spencer. “I am thankful for the bipartisan support in that endeavor.”

Spencer said he is looking forward to working with the House of Representatives to advance this legislation further.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to work with my colleagues in the House as this bill continues through our legislative process, and I am thankful to Rep. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) and Rep. Earl Harris (D-East Chicago) for serving as sponsors.”
