Radius Indiana Establishes Magnificent Monon South Main Street Program

Radius Indiana has introduced an initiative to develop Main Street communities.

With its Monon South Trail project well underway, Radius Indiana is looking for other ways to grow economic development in the region. Its newest offering, the Magnificent Monon South Main Street Program, hopes to do just that. Jeff Quyle, President and CEO of Radius Indiana, explained, “The whole goal of the trail, from an economic development perspective, is to get trail goers into downtown communities. This will bring new tourism revenue to those towns along the trail corridor and activate downtown business districts for the benefit of local residents as well as visitors.”

The Magnificent Monon South Main Street Program was created to guide member communities along the Monon South Trail through the application process to qualify for the Indiana Main Street Program. Once accredited, member communities will be eligible for grant opportunities, technical assistance and educational resources made available “to encourage community-driven revitalization of downtown areas in cities and towns.”

Kristal Painter, COO for Discover Southern Indiana sat down with WITZ to talk about how the new initiative and the trail benefit local communities.

“We've also set up the Magnificent Monon South, which is a Main Street concept where we're working with a regional Main Street concept to help the economic development in each of those small communities, because they wouldn't have the resources and the capacity to set up Main Street communities on their own. So we're working with them to help with the development of additional assets and resources and attractions to support the trail and the visitors that come and walk and hike the trail. But it's a great new outdoor recreational asset in Southern Indiana. It fits right in with our rolling hills the knob stones that you'll see in Clark and Washington County. It'll also fit in with the state parks and the Hoosier National Forest and all of the different natural resources that we have - so it's just one more attraction for people to come and enjoy the outdoor recreation in Southern Indiana.”
