Otterbein Celebrates Completion of Dirk Studebaker Trail
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the town of Otterbein celebrated the completion of the Dirk Studebaker Trail on May 29.
The 0.9-mile, 10-foot-wide asphalt multi-use trail was constructed by the town of Otterbein with help from a $718,720 grant from the DNR announced in April 2022.
“Trails are all about connecting neighbors within a community and providing a safe way to enjoy time outdoors,” said Governor Mike Braun. “This new trail in Otterbein is a great new resource and we’re happy to be a partner with the town to see this project come to life.”
The new trail runs along the north side of Oxford Street from the new trailhead at the intersection with County Line Road and Meadow Street to Lindsay Lane in Tippecanoe County. The project includes a new pedestrian bridge over the Otterbein Ditch and connects the town, Otterbein Commons, and Otterbein Foods near U.S. 52.
“This trail has been a vision for many years,” said Treeva Sarles, Otterbein clerk-treasurer. “The town’s largest church, grocery store, and an apartment complex is on Oxford Street, which is a truck route to two major manufacturing companies. This trail provides a safe way to travel to the church, grocery store and apartments, rather than walking or biking in the roadway. This trail also provides a safe place to exercise for all our residents. This has been wonderful experience in getting this project to the finish line and the town is very thankful to the DNR, as without these funds this would not have been possible. This is a major asset to our community and is already being very used.”
DNR has led the largest infusion of trails funding in state history, with $180 million in dedicated trail funding administered through DNR that facilitates critical trail connections within and between Hoosier communities. To date, 61 of the 89 projects are complete, totaling more than 172 miles of trail built since the program’s inception.
