Northeast Dubois Junior/Senior High School Students Celebrate as the Accolades Roll In

By Drew Hasselbring

Dubois - Tuesday night’s meeting of the Northeast Dubois School Board was packed with news as the board was treated to a slide show of the “Happenings at the Jr/Sr High School.”

The 7th and 8th graders have something to be proud about, as U.S. News and World Report has named Northeast Dubois Jr High one of the best middle schools in the country for 2024!

A new “Students of the Month” program has been instituted at the junior/senior high. In an effort to celebrate the achievements of the school’s great students, another opportunity presented itself to enrich our students even more in the process. When Meyer Distributing saw the size of the trophies that would match the school budget, they decided to step in and upgrade them to nearly triple the original size. In addition, students had the opportunity to work with the marketing department at Meyer to participate in the production of the trophies. The final product was designed at Meyer and then showed to the students. Now students at the school are printing them and making them in class. The awards are acrylic with laser engraving and a 3-d printed base, and are even more meaningful because of the collaborative effort that has been invested into the Students of the Month program by so many people.

The school has been busy preparing for the year end, with an academic pep session to honor scholastic success, and the Holiday Ball which was held last Friday. Jeep Engineering and Manufacturing created a variety of Christmas gifts for sale, and the culinary class has been hard at work preparing holiday-focused dishes. Volunteers from the French Club also delivered donations to the new Next Step Recovery Home in Jasper this week.

Emily Recker, a senior at Northeast Dubois Junior/Senior High School, assisted in the presentation of the slide show for the board and provided an update of the many scholastic and athletic accolades being awarded to students this year. She said that the FFA has been busy, taking home awards in crops, forestry, entomology, and welding - even securing spots in the state competition. Recker actually appeared just weeks ago on the front page of The Herald in a spotlight article discussing her selection for the national FFA conference.

In other news, the Northeast Dubois College Panel for 2024 has been set for Friday, January 5. Any currently enrolled secondary education students are encouraged to come and share their experiences with the college-bound junior and seniors in attendance. Please contact Northeast Dubois Junior/Senior High School if you would like to participate in the panel.

School will be closed for Winter break from December 22-January 3, with students returning on January 4. News regarding any potential inclement weather or snow day announcements will be made through all the regular media channels.
