New Scam Text Alert: Don't Fall for Fraudulent Weblinks and Fake BMV Websites
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) wants to warn its customers of a new type of text message scam impersonating the BMV.
The latest version of this text message scam uses links that closely mimic a State of Indiana web address and takes the user to a site that deceptively copies the BMV website. This site will even create fraudulent BMV receipts and confirmation numbers to fool customers.
These messages should be considered fraudulent. We urge the public to:
- Ignore these messages.
- Delete the message immediately.
- Do not click on any links.
Be advised the BMV will never ask you to pay any fees through a link sent via a text message. The BMV does not send SMS text messages about outstanding penalties.
Unfortunately, scam texts impersonating the BMV have become more frequent and have adapted to using the BMV's seal to falsely create legitimacy. Usually, the 'fees' mentioned in these scam texts are not ones the BMV collects.
