New Law Addressing Heat & Athletes Takes Effect in July

STATEWIDE--A new law directed at keeping athletes safe during the heat will take effect July 1st.

That law says interscholastic and intramural coaches have to pass a course on heat preparation. It will be mandatory for those coaches to complete the course every 2 years.

The heat safety course is already offered by the IHSAA and many coaches have completed the training. The law will make this training a requirement. That's in addition to the concussion course coaches are required to take.

Republican State Representative Ron Bacon of Chandler authored the bill. He says students can do their part by staying hydrated and making sure they recognize the signs of heat exhaustion.
