Meteorologists Fear Proposed Wind Farm Will Interfere With Critical Weather Radar Beam

GIBSON COUNTY -- Hundreds are expected to attend a public meeting tonight in Gibson County as county commissioners will discuss a possible new wind farm.

The proposal would put dozens of wind turbines in an open field near a weather radar station in Owensville, which is part of the state's advanced warning system for severe weather.

Scientists and meteorologists at the station are concerned that the close proximity of the tall turbines might block part of the radar's beam, which would bounce the beam back and create a false picture of rain or other weather anomalies.

Commissioners say they are considering all scientific research on the project before deciding whether or not to follow through with it.
