Loogootee School Corporation Pairs Holiday Fun with Plans for the Future
At the Loogootee School Corporation Board meeting, board members heard about facility
improvements, student events, and college and career preparedness.
Some long-awaited improvements are coming to LMS. The board approved an AIA contract
document with Myszak and Partners, the same architecture firm that has been used in the past.
The architect’s contract will allow Myszak to begin official drawings for the roofing project at
the middle school. The existing roof is over 20 years old and is in need of replacement. Plans for
some HVAC work will also be drawn up.
The corporation will also move forward with lighting for the sports facilities. The outside
lighting for the sports facilities was included in the current project for the 2024 bonds, so work
in that area will begin soon.
A series of personnel recommendations was also introduced, with resignations and hirings
accepted and approved. Claims and vouchers were authorized as presented.
In her report, Dr. Christmas said students have been busy this month. During Computer Science
Week, students got to do multiple coding activities. At LMS, over $2000 was donated as part of
a Student Council initiative, exceeding their initial goal of $400. This allowed the group to fund
Thanksgiving meals for 20 families. The middle school and high school had a final exam pep rally
to relieve stress and enjoy some fun competition.
Holiday performances delighted audiences with sleigh bells, elves, and Christmas cheer. The
elementary school Christmas program, which led off the month of December, was a great
success. The Winter Choir Concert, which is always a popular event, drew crowds again this
year for their program of holiday music. The Christmas Band Concert also had a great turnout in
spite of the frigid temperatures. Homecoming night was a fun and well-attended event, offering
both dancing and a watch party for the IU/Ohio State Conference Championship.
At the end of November, Juniors and Seniors travelled to Shoals for a College and Career Fair.
Students were able to speak with representatives from various colleges and employers. They
were able to learn about many of the offerings available locally and ask questions that will help
them to make decisions about their future. FAFSA night was held on December 3, with
assistance available on site to help families fill out their FAFSA application.
Winter break will be from December 22 – January 1, with January 2 as an asynchronous
learning day.
