Loogootee Redevelopment Commission Holds Inaugural Meeting

The Loogootee Redevelopment Commission, which was just established by an ordinance, met for its inaugural session.

The RDC will oversee and support projects that contribute to Loogootee’s future growth. Current items include the city’s updated Comprehensive Plan and construction of Oak Street Village, a new housing and childcare facility. Infrastructure was a primary focus of the Commission’s first meeting. After discussion, Dave Smith was selected as President of the Board. Lori Carrico was approved as Secretary.

The Loogootee Council’s involvement will be necessary in to move a deposit of $350,000 into an account operated by the RDC. How those funds will be used depends on the short vs. long- term goals of the Commission. The comprehensive plan for the city will be complete soon, and it was noted that this should help to provide some direction.

Several TIF districts are also being evaluated within the city limits. These will likely require some roadway updates, but should eventually provide a revenue stream for the Redevelopment Commission. Multiple roadway improvements and the acquisition of a green space were suggested, with the acknowledgment that projects will have to be carefully selected so that limited funding is put to its best use.
