Loogootee Opts to Leverage AI for Road Management

Loogootee’s road management is preparing for a high-tech upgrade.

After reviewing the results of a demo with Vialytics, the City of Loogootee has decided to move forward with the company’s road management system. The software uses AI to evaluate road conditions through an iPhone app mounted in a vehicle, with photos taken approximately every 10 feet. The system performs a street analysis, including pavement damage, street signs, and raised or lowered manholes.

Each section of the road is scored, helping the Street Department to recognize areas that need attention. The software identifies items that are DOT compliant, and which ones need to be replaced or repaired. It uses that information to determine a Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER), which has been done manually in the past. This simplifies and standardizes a process that was described as complicated and inconsistent.

In addition to providing a considerable time savings for the Street Department, this program offers numerous other benefits. Community Crossings project applications require a PASER report, which is generated by the Vialytics software. This can support grant funding requests, possibly increasing grant awards. The system provides an objective and quick assessment of road conditions, streamlining workflows and prioritizing repairs. Locally, Huntingburg adopted the program in August. Loogootee joins at least 25 counties across Indiana that have already contracted with the company.
