Loogootee Makes a Strong Showing at the Beta State Convention

Loogootee students showed off their phenomenal talents and academic strength this month.

A series of personnel matters were introduced, with resignations and hirings accepted as presented. The board approved the second reading and gave final approval of new and revised school board policies. The 2026-27 LCSC Calendar was approved, and a school edition of “The Addams Family” was accepted as the Spring musical.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Shelley Christmas was on hand to provide an update on some recent school activities. During Red Ribbon Week, students looked at healthy choices and how to make positive decisions that affect their overall health. They learned about taking care of their bodies and staying away from drugs and alcohol.

At the elementary school, a Veteran’s Day celebration included visits from military family members and a parade down the halls. Book Character Day was October 31, with students and teachers dressing up as their favorite literary characters.

At the middle school, the architecture class finished their house projects. Some sixth graders learned about photography, aspect ratios, and lighting. Others learned about binary code, and a mock election allowed students to practice creating a campaign. On October 31, Finding Nemo Kids was produced by the middle school and elementary students. The Junior Beta State Convention took place in Evansville on November 13-14. The middle school took 9 first place wins, 11 second place awards, and 11 in third place. 6 students performed in the All-Region Honor Band, and an all-band concert featured a Halloween theme.

The middle school and high school had a joint Veteran’s Day event, with musical performances, a moving guest speaker, and visiting veterans from the VFW. Students participated in the Festival of Bands, which will be hosted by Loogootee next year. Students attending the High School Beta State Convention took home 7 first place wins, 7 second place finishes, and 10 third place awards. Sarah Jones was the $1000 Indiana Beta Scholarship recipient.

The College and Career Fair is this week in Shoals, where various college representatives will be present. FAFSA Family Night is December 3 at 6 pm at the school, and assistance will be available for those with questions about completing the application.

The mayor informed the board that the city is in the process of creating several TIF districts for residential development. TIF districts generate income by captured assessed values for a period of time. The new housing could create 150 new infrastructure users.
