Jasper BZA Considers Variances for Museum, Boys and Girls Club, and Property Plans
At their meeting this week, the Jasper Board of Zoning Appeals considered variance requests
for the Dubois County Museum, a residential property, and the Boys and Girls Club of Dubois
County.
Dubois County Museum, as owner and petitioner located at 2704 Newton Street, requested a
variance from 16.8.7.C.1.a. aka Chapter 8 Signage, Standards for Business (Except B2), Industrial
and Conservation Districts, Building Signs, of the City of Jasper’s Unified Development
Ordinance to allow the maximum surface area of a wall sign to exceed 100 square feet. The
building used to be a factory, and its appearance was cited as being an obstacle to walk-in
traffic, since it does not look like a traditional museum space. The organization asked to install a
sign on the north side of the entrance to promote visibility and increase attendance, which was
unanimously approved.
David Zahn, as owner and petitioner for a lot located at Kluemper Road and Andrew Lane
sought a variance from 16. 7.10.A.1 aka Chapter 7 Development Standards, Accessory Uses and
Structures, Allowance, of the City of Jasper’s UDO to allow an accessory structure on a vacant
parcel zoned R-1. Zahn said the structure would be used to store lawn equipment and supplies
for maintaining the property prior to constructing a home. The proposed 12x18 building will
match the planned style and colors of the home. At the public hearing, several neighbors voiced
concerns over potential subdivision of the lot, as that was an issue with the lot’s prior
ownership. The BZA approved the request with a commitment to begin construction of the
primary home within 24 months.
A request was submitted by Trinity United Church of Christ as owner and Boys and Girls Club of
Dubois County as petitioner at 310 W Eighth Street. They asked for the variance from 16.4.7.B
aka Chapter 4 Districts, Section 7 (Medium Density Residential) R3, Special Exception Uses, of
the City’s Unified Development Ordinance 2016-30, to allow a childcare/day-care center in an
R3 zoning district. Becky Moorman, Secretary on the Steering Committee for Boys and Girls
Club of Dubois County, said that they plan to open their doors after Fall break the year. They
recently discovered that the time frame special exception use granted to Trinity Church for
their daycare had lapsed. Moorman asked that the Boys and Girls Club be allowed to operated
out of Trinity Church, and the board approved the variance request as submitted.
