Indiana Governor Braun Advances Quality of Place in Southwest Indiana through READI
Indiana Governor Mike Braun is strengthening communities and quality of place through the Indiana Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI). Today in Southwest Indiana, local and regional officials hosted a community celebration and donor sign unveiling at Lou Dennis Community Park, marking the culmination of the $1.8 million investment that has created a new community and recreational asset for residents, visitors and families in Newburgh.
“Through READI, Indiana is powering regionally driven strategies to create vibrant communities where people want to live, work and play,” said Gov. Braun. “The Lou Dennis Community Park is a prime example of how communities are working together across government, economic development, non-profits and residents to build in-demand assets that support Hoosiers of all ages.”
The Lou Dennis Community Park in Newburgh now features a new playground and the Robert Emmett Griffin Obstacle & Fitness Zone, along with accessible surfacing, shade, seating and other improvements designed to provide recreational opportunities for children, teens, adults and families. The new playground, which was supported by $1 million in READI 2.0 funding, features inclusive and accessible play opportunities intended to serve children of varying ages and abilities. Together, these assets will improve quality of life in Newburgh and the surrounding Southwest Indiana region by connecting community, promoting play and supporting health and wellness.
Today’s celebration includes the installation of two permanent donor signs at the park, recognizing the collaborative effort and community support that made both projects possible. In addition to funding through READI 2.0, the Town of Newburgh and not-for-profit organizations, more than 80 individuals and families contributed to the campaign, demonstrating the broad community backing behind the project.
"This project is a great example of what can happen when public investment, private generosity and community partnerships come together around a shared vision,” said Newburgh Deputy Town Manager Andrea Balboni. “The playground is already doing exactly what we hoped it would do – bringing children and families together. Today gives us an opportunity to recognize the people behind the project and make sure they know how much their investment in Newburgh is appreciated.”
Indiana’s READI program is a $1.25 billion investment in regional-led strategies designed to strengthen communities, retain and attract top talent, and increase opportunities for Hoosiers for years to come.
“Under Gov. Braun’s leadership, Indiana is investing in quality of place and quality of opportunity initiatives like never before,” said Indiana Secretary of Commerce Chuck Goodrich. “In today’s landscape where people are choosing where to live before choosing jobs, it’s critical that our communities are designed to support, retain and attract top talent. The Lou Dennis Community Park in Newburgh will empower Southwest Indiana to grow its population, its workforce and its economy.”
Southwest Indiana was awarded $95 million in READI 1.0 and READI 2.0 matching funds, with additional project support through Lilly Endowment Inc. grant funds, to grow the region’s quality of place, quality of life and quality of opportunity across Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties. The region’s READI investments are designed to foster population growth and upward mobility by connecting the region’s riverfront with inspiring public amenities, attractions and housing; grow high-paying jobs; improve quality of place for healthier residents; build housing near employment clusters; and capitalize on the I-69 Ohio River Crossing to create new regional opportunities.
