Huntingburg Energy Departments Complete Meter Replacement Project

At the Huntingburg Common Council and Utility Board meeting this week, officials heard that the energy department completed a major initiative.

Energy Superintendent John Reutepohler said crews finished installation of the remaining gas meters, completely removing the gas department from the old ITRON system. The program began in the Spring of 2022, with over 3900 meters installed. The annual leak survey was completed this month, covering 51 miles of mains and services. No underground leaks were detected, and small leaks were repaired on a few meters.

The Electric Department also finished the transition from ITRON to SENSUS meters, completing the meter installation project. Crews are trimming trees while the weather allows, in addition to replacing copper primary wires with aluminum. Several electric poles have also been replaced.

In other business, City Attorney Phil Schneider introduced the Salary Ordinance Amendment for 2027, which was adopted. Clerk-Treasurer Thomas Dippel discussed appointments to the Redevelopment Commission. Nick Stevens and Jayme Rasche, both currently on the board, are willing to serve again. The Council unanimously approved their reappointment to the RDC board for the next calendar year. The Council also approved the 2027 Budget, adopting Ordinance 2026-38.

Destination Huntingburg gave a short presentation on the history of their organization and its impact on the community. In addition to its work in preserving the historic downtown district and League Stadium, DH hosts multiple events throughout the year that are free to the public. Initiatives for 2027 will include a new Facade Grant Program being developed with Ball State.

Trick or treating hours will be on Saturday from 6-8, including at the fire station. Due to the traffic levels at Hunter’s Crossing, the area will be closed to incoming and outgoing traffic beginning at 5:30. The church across the street on Chestnut has volunteered their lot for drivers to park during that time. - By Drew Hasselbring For more information on these and other updates, visit www.huntingburg-in.gov
