Hand Tools & Herbicide for Invasive Plant Control
The Daviess, Martin, or Orange County Soil & Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) are
offering FREE Invasive Control Kits to landowners and residents in the three counties. The kits
feature hand tools and herbicide to control woody invasive plants, and were designed to provide
the basic components to conduct cut-stump herbicide applications. Unlike herbicide
applications that are applied to a plant’s leaves, cut-stump is a targeted application where a
concentrated herbicide is applied to a stump’s surface right after cutting. The herbicide then
goes into the plant’s roots to prevent it from resprouting, without harming nearby plants.
Kits include a 5-gallon bucket, Friskars Loppers, Silky Folding Saw, Glyphosate Herbicide, Blue
Dye, Herbicide Dauber, Measuring Cup, Nitrile Gloves, Eye Protection, and Invasive Plant
Flagging Tape.
To qualify for a free kit, residents or landowners with invasive plants in Daviess, Martin, or
Orange Counties first need to schedule a free site visit with SWCD Invasive Species Specialist
Emily Finch. Email [email protected], or call or text 812-329-0048. As part of the
site visit, Finch will identify any invasive plants on your property, go over control options, and
can also provide a custom invasive species management plan, all free of charge.
While the SWCDs provide this invasive species technical assistance all year, the kits will only be
available while supplies last, so don’t wait!
This program is made possible by support from the Daviess-Martin CISMA and Orange County
Invasives Partnership. It is funded by a Clean Water Indiana Grant from the Indiana State
Department of Agriculture, and additional funding from the nonprofit State of Indiana
Cooperative Invasives Management.
