Ferdinand EDC Supports Abatement Request
A new economic development zone in Ferdinand is one step closer to approval.
On Monday evening, the Ferdinand Economic Development Commission convened to consider
an application to designate an economic development zone. Leibering Dimension in Ferdinand
provided a high-level overview of their abatement request. Since the board would make a
recommendation to the Council, they emphasized a desire to understand the application’s
significance.
To stay competitive in the dimensional lumber side of their industry, the company plans to
build a large steel frame building to house processing equipment. Since hardwood comes in
multiple sizes, they explained that the additional space is important to improve efficiency. This
would assist in the grading, stacking, and organizing of their lumber supply. By sorting the
inventory, it would be easier to locate the right board for non-standard cuts to generate less
waste.
The project would utilize 25% used equipment purchased out of state and 75% new equipment.
In their review, the board noted that the proposal does not remove any existing structures,
which would have an assessed value. Instead, it would build a new building on a gravel lot,
which would generate a tax base for the community. The project would also generate 3 jobs
and retain 12 existing jobs. With no further questions, the board voted to forward the request
on to the Town Council for their consideration.
