Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian on I-165

On Wednesday, March 11 th , at approximately 6:50 am, Owensboro- Daviess County Central Dispatch received a report of an injury accident in the south bound lanes of the 6020 block of Interstate 165 near the Daviess/Ohio County line. The initial report was that a vehicle struck a pedestrian and left the scene. 

Upon arrival, Daviess County Sheriff’s Deputies and firefighters from the Daviess County and Masonville Fire Department and AMR Ambulance Service discovered the pedestrian had died as a result of his injuries. 

The initial investigation indicates that at the time of the wreck, a towing and wrecker service technician was out of his truck assisting a disabled semi on the shoulder of the roadway when he was struck by a passing southbound semi-truck. In addition to striking and killing the technician, the semi-truck had also sideswiped both the wrecker and the broken down semi causing moderate damage to both. 

Deputies requested area law enforcement to observe for the semi that had left the scene and were quickly notified that the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) had located the vehicle parked on the side of the roadway in Ohio County with the driver out inspecting the damage to his truck. OCSO deputies and Hartford Police Department officers detained the driver and secured his vehicle for evidence reasons. 

Detours were established by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet preventing traffic from entering I-165 from the US 60 Bypass due to both lanes of southbound I-165 being closed while emergency crews investigated the crash. 

The driver of the disabled semi, Suk Subba, age 31, of Antioch, Tennessee, has been charged with Manslaughter 2 nd Degree, Wanton Endangerment 1 st Degree, Leaving the Scene of Accident (Serious Injury/Death) Failure to Give Right of Way to Emergency Vehicle. He was uninjured but transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital by deputies to be evaluated but was not injured in the crash. The driver of the semi that left the scene was arrested by DCSO and taken to OHRH for a medical clearance and blood sample collection. He was not injured in the crash. 

The Daviess County Coroner’s Office responded to the crash to investigate the death, Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement responded to inspect the semi, and Daviess County Emergency Management Agency responded to assist with clean up and coordination. 

The roadway was closed for 2 and a half hours. The DCSO Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.
