Dubois County Makes Plans for Upcoming Community Crossings Grant Application Cycle
The Dubois County Highway Department has been keeping itself busy this season with a full
schedule of county roadway projects.
The 2027-01 Community Crossings Grant application window opens on September 1. The
county is eligible to apply for up to $621,665.78 for this round of funding. This is the difference
between the maximum CCMG award of $1 million and the Lane Mile Direct Distribution (LMDD)
check that it received for $378,334.22. The CCMG program is an 80/20 split, with the county
responsible for 20% of project costs.
In his public update, County Highway Engineer Levi Leffert said his estimated project costs for
the application is approximately $927,000 in order to maximize funding potential. Old
Huntingburg Road was removed from the previous list of projects and replaced by another
candidate that was in more need of repair: 300 North and 36 th Street. While both roads are
named, 36 th Street was described as a continuation of 300 North. Leffert said that roads
included in the proposed project list have a PASER rating of 4 or 5 and are due to be paved.
They are heavily traveled roadways and were last paved anywhere from the 1990s to the early
2000s. The department tries to plan larger projects for Community Crossings, reserving smaller
roads for in-house projects.
Projects that will be included in the September 1 Community Crossings application, with a
combined total of 7.45 miles, are:
Mariah Hill Road from 1100 South to Spencer County Line: 1.91 miles
Old Road 64 from 500 West to Huntingburg City Limit: 1.74 miles
Mill Street from 400 North to Jasper City Limit: 0.87 miles
400 North from US 231 to Mill Street: 0.56 miles
300 North from 500 West to 350 West: 1.35 miles
36 th Street from 350 West to Jasper City Limit: 1.02 miles
Paving has been completed on Santine Road. 550 West and 600 North are in progress, with
expected completion by the end of the week. Work is scheduled to begin on Kessner Bridge
Road, 150 North, 200 West, and Cherry Street, and should also be completed by the end of the
week. Work on 925 South and 950 South is scheduled to begin at the end of August. Repairs on
the bonded roads around the Crossvine Solar area was performed last week by J.H. Rudolph.
The company was retained by Crossvine and will continue to do patching work and repairs as
needed. Roads are contractually required to be restored to their pre-construction condition at a
minimum.
