In recent public comments, Highway Engineer Levi Leffert provided an update on Dubois
County road projects. Calcar completed paving on Dubois Cuzco Road and Old Petersburg Road.
The last remaining road for 2025 paving projects is 490 West, which will be completed before
the Thanksgiving holidays.
The Highway Department is compiling a list of roads that will be approved for next year. These
will include chip and seal, paving, and rejuvenation. Due to reduced funding, Leffert explained
there will be fewer paving projects scheduled for 2026. In order to maintain the roads, it is
expected that more chip seal will be used. Surrounding counties have opted for the more cost effective solution as well. While it does not create a smooth driving surface, the process
extends the life of existing pavement. By sealing cracks to protect against water and oxidation,
further damage can be prevented until more extensive repairs are completed. Leffert said the
department will be proactive and put preventative measures in place wherever possible.
Bridge 21 over Little Creek on 200 W was closed on November 3 to replace the concrete deck.
The bridge crew has removed the existing deck. Work is expected to take 3-4 more weeks, and
the full closure will remain in place for the duration of the renovation. After Bridge 21 is
completed, work will begin on Bridge 116 located on County Road 820 East. A detour will use
175 South and 1025 East, adding about 4 minutes of driving time. Assurances were made that
winter weather will be a consideration before moving forward with any substantial repairs for
Bridge 116. The application for the Bridge Safety Improvement Project, a federally funded grant
program, will be submitted by the end of November after a thorough review.
