Dubois County Clerk Amy Kippenbrock Reminds Voters: Leave Campaign Signs Alone — Theft and Vandalism Are Crimes
Dubois County Clerk Amy Kippenbrock reminds residents that
lawfully placed political signs are protected by Indiana law. Stealing, damaging, or
vandalizing campaign signs may constitute Theft (IC 35-43-4-2) or Criminal Conversion
(IC 35-43-4-3) and can result in criminal charges.
Key points:
Theft: Removing or taking campaign signs without permission can be prosecuted
under Indiana Code § 35-43-4-2. If the sign is valued at $750 or more, it can be
a Level 6 felony; if under $750, it is a Class A misdemeanor.
Criminal Conversion: Damaging or otherwise converting another’s property,
including campaign signs, without authorization may be charged under Indiana
Code § 35-43-4-3.
State right-of-way: Campaign signs are not permitted in the state right-of-way,
under Indiana Code § 9-21-4-6. Placing signs in highway rights-of-way can
create safety hazards and may be removed by authorities.
If you believe a campaign sign has been stolen, damaged, or vandalized, please report
the incident to local law enforcement. For questions about sign placement and right-of-
way boundaries, contact the Dubois County Highway Department or the Indiana
Department of Transportation.
“A respectful, lawful campaign environment is important for our community,” said Clerk
Amy Kippenbrock. “Please follow the law and treat campaign materials with respect.”
