Dubois County Awarded Federal Funds for Bridge Safety Upgrades

Dubois County will soon begin a major safety improvement project after receiving approval for significant federal funding. In his recent public comments, County Engineer Levi Leffert announced some good news for local motorists.

In November 2025, Dubois County applied for federal funding for a project aimed at improving safety on approximately 60 county-owned bridges. The project will include installing bridge rails, guardrails and end treatments designed to help prevent and reduce the severity of vehicle runoffs. The Indiana Department of Transportation recently notified the county that it has been awarded $2.835 million for the project, which will cover about 90% of the construction and construction inspection costs. The work will be fully contracted and will not require County staff.

As a condition of the award, the County must be under contract with a consultant for design services by August 1, 2026. The process must begin with an RFP, or Request for Proposals, which has been submitted. INDOT will post the RFP to their website soon so that any interested consultants can submit a letter of interest. This will include pertinent criteria and background information for the project. Responses and materials received will be reviewed by INDOT and submitted to Leffert. Once a consultant is selected, they will be placed under contract before the August 1 deadline.

At that point, the County will be awarded an additional $954,000 to cover 90% of the design costs. In combination, that totals $3.789 million in federal funds, which will have a tremendous impact on safety improvements for the region. Leffert emphasized that this will benefit not only locals who use the roadways, but also visitors to the area. With the area’s thriving tourism industry, which continues to increase, the investment in bridge improvements will support both public safety and continued economic growth.
