Dubois County ARC to Host Ninth Annual Overdose Awareness Candlelight Vigil on August 27

The Dubois County Advocacy for Recovery and Prevention Council (ARC) invites community members to attend its ninth annual Overdose Awareness Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, August 27, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST at Market Street Park in Huntingburg.

The event is free and open to the public and serves as an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance, support, and hope. Attendees will honor the lives lost to overdose, support grieving families and friends, and raise awareness about substance use, recovery, and overdose prevention.

The evening's program will feature guest speakers, live instrumental music, an open microphone portion for attendees who wish to share memories or reflections, and the reading of names of those who have been lost to overdose. Community members will also have access to resource tables hosted by local organizations offering information and support related to prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction services.

As the sun sets, attendees will participate in a candlelight vigil and a butterfly release, symbolic acts of remembrance, healing, and hope.

"Every life lost to overdose leaves behind loved ones, stories, and lasting impacts on our community," said Jenna Bieker Jones, Coordinator of Dubois County ARC. "This vigil is an opportunity to honor those we have lost, support those who continue to grieve, and remind those who are struggling that hope and recovery are possible."

The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and/or blanket for seating in the park's lawn area.

International Overdose Awareness Day is recognized around the world on August 31st to remember those who have died from overdose, acknowledge the grief experienced by family and friends, and promote efforts to prevent future overdose deaths through education, awareness, and community support.
