Deaconess Memorial Medical Center Announces Five New Resident Physicians

Deaconess Memorial Medical Center has announced its most recent class of family medicine residents. Residency training is the final step in the education process for physicians to be able to practice medicine independently. The five new residents include Arwa Khairaj, MBBS from Dow International Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan; Shanel Khan, MD from University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Saint Kitts; Chayla Mendel, DO from University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky; Jack Mendel, DO from University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky; and Avinash Nankani, MBBS from Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi, Pakistan. They are all members of the American Academy of Family Physicians. 

The Family Medicine Residency Program is a collaboration between Indiana University School of Medicine and Deaconess Memorial Medical Center. In addition to classroom-style learning, the new physicians also gain experience by seeing patients at Deaconess Clinic Family Medicine Residency – Jasper and throughout Deaconess Memorial Medical Center under the guidance of board-certified physicians. The family medicine residency program is accredited through ACGME and receives support from the Southwestern Indiana Graduate Medical Education Consortium and IU School of Medicine.
