County Officials Praise Snow Removal Efforts, Outline Upcoming Road Work
With roads cleared and milder temperatures ahead, Dubois County reviewed the county’s
response to the recent snowstorm. Snow removal efforts were deemed a success, with no
injuries or truck rollovers reported. The Highway Department said that feedback from residents
has been overwhelmingly positive. While every effort was made to avoid plowing driveways
shut, safety remained the top priority while operating heavy machinery in dangerous
conditions.
Following weeks of inclement weather, road conditions remain a high priority as the Highway
Department prepares to address potholes and cracks caused by snow and ice. In his public
remarks, Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken said that the department will consider
switching to a rubber crack sealant available through Seal Master. The current material, which
is used for chip and seal overlays, is not performing well. The existing product tends to shift
after application, re-exposing cracks. The Highway Department has scheduled a demonstration
of the new product, which is already in widespread use throughout the state. The rubber
material offered by Seal Master is reported to be durable and effective. If approved, materials
would be purchased with an expected equipment purchase needed in the future.
Road closures will be in effect for the county’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Roads will
be closed for the 5k on Saturday, March 14 from 7-10 am, and for the parade on Sunday, March
15 from 12:30-3 pm. Last year’s route will be used again this year.
Repairs for Bridge 116 are commencing after a delay due to weather. County Road 820 East will
be closed 0.8 miles north of Schnellville Road to replace the beams and the deck, with an
anticipated closure of 4-5 weeks.
After reviewing core samples from repaired roads, the county will continue using Rejuvtec
applications. The treatment penetrates asphalt to address aging at its source and has been
shown to extend pavement life by five to seven years. Rejuvtec will remain as a service provider
for the county.
