County Council Meeting: 12/11/23

By: Drew Hasselbring

A newly vacated city clerk position is slated to be eliminated and replaced with a new school liaison nurse, providing badly needed support for student healthcare in Dubois County schools. The Commissioners have already approved the creation of the position. The County Council today gave their approval for the salary ordinance as well as approval for beginning the hiring process and advertising for candidates. Ideally, the position will be filled with a bilingual RN who will be able to go into Dubois County schools and perform vision and hearing screenings. The search will begin immediately and last until a suitable candidate can be found, hopefully in the first weeks of the year.

An update on the 15 th street bridge project provided some unexpected movement as the Council was asked to make a approve a larger expenditure. While the original budget of the project was previously approved at the design stage, the city has expressed a strong desire to add the construction element to the local agreement in the hopes of streamlining the process. Engineering has already been funded, and the project is expected to still come in under budget. The expenditure was approved for the 15th street bridge design and construction so the city can move forward with preparations at the building site. Due diligence was also done to ensure wildlife pathways as well as FEMA mapping protocols. Significant time at this meeting was also given to updates on projects related to today’s RSDC meeting. And, in their final item before adjourning, the Council also discussed the proposed funding for next year for Dubois Strong and Grow Dubois County.
