The Indiana State Police held its annual awards and recognition ceremony in Indianapolis on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. The ceremony publicly recognized the achievements and accomplishments that too often go unrecognized. Department personnel, both sworn and professional staff, were honored for their dedication, service, bravery, and devotion to the department and the citizens of Indiana.
During the ceremony, Capitol Police Officer Kurt Bensheimer was recognized as the 2025 Capitol Police Section Officer of the Year. This award is given annually to the Officer who exemplifies strength of character, a strong work ethic and an unsurpassed level of integrity that is the embodiment of being a Capitol Police Section Officer.
In 2025, Bensheimer conducted 384 traffic stops for a total of 265 citations, 98 written warnings, 87 criminal summonses, 63 vehicles impounded, 16 outright criminal arrests, and four OWI investigations, earning the highest activity numbers within Capitol Police to date.
Bensheimer has distinguished himself as a highly proactive and motivated police officer.
