BLOOMINGTON DISTRICT TROOPERS HONOR FALLEN COMRADE

Troopers from the Bloomington District honored one of their fallen comrades Monday, June 8th, with a Memorial Walk along the Trooper Robert C. Gillespie Memorial Mile, located on SR37 between Bedford and Mitchell.

Trooper Robert C. Gillespie died in the line of duty on June 8, 1962, when he was involved in a fatal traffic crash while responding to a call for assistance near Mitchell in Lawrence County. Trooper Gillespie was assigned to Bloomington District 7A, which opened in 1956, and he had served with the Indiana State Police for 12 years. He was a United States Navy veteran. In 1959, he became a recipient of the agency’s Gold Star Award for Valor for continuing to pursue a couple who had fired shots at him and wounded him.

Bloomington District Troopers met near the crash site and conducted their Memorial Walk to honor Trooper Gillespie’s sacrifice. Those who participated in the walk included one of Trooper Gillespie’s sons and Trooper Samuel Gillespie, a grandson, whose current duty assignment is the Bloomington District.
