STELTENPOHL FAMILY OF JASPER RECOGNIZED AT BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA COURT OF HONOR

EVANSVILLE – Buffalo Trace Council, Boy Scouts of America (BSA) awarded longtime Jasper resident and community Scouter Ken Steltenpohl the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Outstanding Eagle Scout Award at the Court of Honor on May 1st. One of the most prominent recognitions Scouting offers, the award’s exclusivity means nominations are often declined or ignored. Ken shares the award with authors, explorers, scientists, and other great leaders of renown.

Marty Steltenpohl, Ken’s brother and fellow Scouter, was recognized with the District Award of Merit for Lincoln Heritage District last Saturday. Marty and his nephew, David Steltenpohl, received the Council Award of Merit as well for an act of heroism.

The Council Award of Merit is a seldom awarded special recognition reserved for acts of heroism or exceptional service in Buffalo Trace Council. Marty’s brother, Ken Steltenpohl, suffered a heart attack and required CPR and urgent medical attention. Both Marty and David acted heroically and provided immediate care that saved Ken’s life. Ken made a full recovery and attended Saturday’s ceremony alongside his brother and son.

The Steltenpohl family has been active in Jasper Scouting since the late 1950s. Ken earned his Eagle Scout Award with Troop 185 in 1965. Ken guided David to his Eagle Scout Award, as did Marty with his own son. Both Marty and Ken continue to help out at Old Ben Scout Reservation, making necessary improvements and keeping the grounds.

Buffalo Trace Council’s Court of Honor was held outside at the Eykamp Scout Center in Evansville, and recognized volunteers and Scouts across the Council, including Eagle Scouts from Jasper and Ferdinand.
